The orchestra was organized in July 1920. Experienced expert M. I. Chernyakhovski was appointed the first conductor of the orchestra. The orchestra conducted by him began to consistently hold concerts with rich music programs since it had been organized. M. I. Chernyakhovski was awarded People’s artist of the Republic and Hero of Labour in 1928. Since 20-30 years of the last century till the beginning of the Great Patriotic War he performed together with world-wide conductors such as O.Klemiperer (Germany), R.Baton (France), F.Shtidre (Austria), Q.Mravinski, N.Qolovanov, A.Hauk, A.Pavlov-Arbenin, S.Stolerman and others. The orchestra was reorganized in 1938. Then famous expert N.P.Anosov, People’s Artist of Russia Federation SSR, professor of Moscow conservatory was appointed to the position of general conductor of the orchestra by the initiative of U.Hajibeyli. Remarkable improvement in the orchestra is related with the experienced and talented conductor. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the orchestra ceased its performances. The orchestra continued its performances in the middle of 1944 related with decade of South Caucasian Republics in Tbilisi and was named after U.Hajibeyli. High skilled L.M. Ginzburq, Honored Art Worker of Russia Federation SSR, professor of Moscow conservatory, who has great repertoire worked general conductor of the orchestra in 1945-1948. Since 1948 Niyazi, People’s artist of USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor conducted the orchestra. He worked in that position till 1984 when he died with short interruptions. Many works of Azerbaijani, Russian and foreign compositors was successfully performed for the first time during the period when Niyazi conducted the orchestra. During those years many symphonic works were performed under direction of A.Hasanov, K.Abdullayev, J.Hajibeyov and others. After successful activity in Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre for 16 years professor R.D.Abdullayev, People’s Artist of the Republic and State Award Laureate was appointed to the position of the general conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra in 1984. He continues in this position honorably up to date. The orchestra performed works of Q.Qarayev, Arif Malikov, F.Qarayev, A.Alizada and many other Azerbaijani and foreign compositors for the first time during the period when Abdullayev conducted it. The orchestra has been in tours to Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Egypt, the USA, France, Great Britain Italy, United Arab Emirates and other foreign countries and gained success under direction of R.Abdullayev. Authors of many great works of world music such as Q.Maler, I.Stravinski, K.Debussi, A.Brukner, Brams and others occupy honorable place in the repertoire of the orchestra. The orchestra is an active participant of “Music of XX century” organized by R.Abdullayev and “Festival of M.L.Rostropovich” which is held annually. Since 2007 the orchestra always participates in summer festivals held in Italy.
Azerbaijan Gara Garayev State Chamber Orchestra Azerbaijan Gara Garayev State Chamber Orchestra was established in 1964 on the initiative of Azerbaijan composers Fikret Amirov and Gara Garayev. Young talented musician Nazim Rzayev was artistic director and leader of the orchestra until 1992. During this period State Chamber Orchestra, which already won well-deserved place among the leading music groups of the country, gave numerous concerts in Russian cities (in particular, Moscow ), In Slovakia, Poland, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey. During the period of 1992 to 1995 Ramiz Melikaslanov was the leader of the Orchestra. The Orchestra under the leadership of R. Melikaslanovt went on tours in Germany. From 1995 to 1997 Yashar Imanov was chief conductor of Chamber Orchestra. People's artist of Azerbaijan Teimur Geokchayev was leader of the Chamber Orchestra from 1998 to 2018. In July 1998 the Orchestra successfully represented Azerbaijan art in London; in September of the same year concert dedicated to the 80-th anniversary of Gara Garayev was given in Paris. Chamber Orchestra repeatedly performed in Moscow and St.Petersburg, at I.S.Bach Festival, Festival of baroque music in Turkey (2000-2003), at the World Exhibition ”EXPO-2000” in Hannover, in 2001 concert was given in Strasbourg on the occasion of Azerbaijan joining Council of Europe. In 2001 and 2002 Chamber Orchestra gave concerts in Austria, in 2004 - in Georgia, in 2005 – in Japan and Egypt, in 2006 – in Belarus, in 2007-2008 – in Southern Korea, Germany and France, in 2009 – in Switzerland, in 2010 – in Egypt, Iran, on “EXPO - 2010” exhibition in Shanghai, China, in 2011 – in Paris and Pekin. As part of varios projects initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourizm, were number of conductors: Salim Akchil, Khakan Shensoi, Simon Kamartin, Fabien Teerikson, Vladimir Runchak, Ricardo Averbach, Roland Freizitser, have been performing with orchestra. Since 2018 Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Azerbaijan State Chamber Orchestra is People’s Artist Fahraddin Kerimov. The Orchestra was repeatedly awarded with honorary diplomas, including Republican prize “Humai”.
Azerbaijan State Choir was formed in 1966 at the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic.The range of team is great, and the creative interests are wide and colorful. Capella has a repertoire of more than 1,000 works, among them Mozart’s "Requiem", Verdi's "Requiem", J. Brahms's "German Requiem" ,I. Stravinsky’s " Symphony of Psalms", S.Rachmaninov’s "Spring", "Vespers”, "Liturgy" and other works. Capella has repeatedly promoted Azerbaijan music in foreign countries(such as Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany, Spain), by taking part in many festivals, decades,and also in the Days of Culture. Since February 1996 the artistic director of Capella is Gulbaji Imanova,who’s known as famous choirmaster of the Republic, National Artist of Azerbaijan, professor and department head of choir conducting in Baku Music Academy named after U.Hacibeyli.
Azerbaijan State Dance Ensemble was founded in 1970. Within 40 years this ensemble has been a striking propagandist of Azerbaijan choreography based on national dance traditions. Due to the activity of the ensemble Azerbaijan National art of dancing with its special figurativeness, picturesque and colorfulness the ensemble has become well known in abroad. The performances of the ensemble are highly appreciated in USA, Japan, Italy, France, Austria, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Israel, Tunisia, Algeria, Turkey, India, Nepal, Australia, Switzerland, China, Iraq, Vietnam, Morocco, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Belgium and in all republics of the USSR. Prominent ballet master - the USSR People’s Artist Leyla Vekilova, and People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Alibaba Abdullayev led this ensemble for many years. Due to their efforts the ensemble has enriched colorful dances in its repertoire Since 1982 artistic director of the ensemble is the People's Artist of Azerbaijan, holder of "Glory" Afaq Melikova. Talented organizer and artistic director Melikov for its activities more efforts in the transfer of knowledge and skills for collective ensemble of his success and fame. The rich inheritance of the Azerbaijan National Art Dance highly reflected in the dances set Melikov. The rich inheritance of Azerbaijan National art of dancing is highly reflected in the dances staged by A.Melikova, A.Melikova is a well-known choreograf-balletmaster beyond the bounds of our republic. She was awarded the honorary title in 2001. Ensembles repertoire including dances based on Azerbaijan composers’ (Tofig Kuliyev, Jahangir Jahangirov, Telman Gadjiyev, Seid Rustamov, Gadji Khanmammadov, Vasif Adigozalov, Emin Sabitoglu) music attracts special attention. State Dance Ensemble is a professional ensemble. It has potential opportunities. Ensemble has brought up professional performers. The well-known dancers of the republic- Nariman Kerimov, Tamilla Eldarova, Yusif Gasimov, Sabina Gasimova, Farman Mammadov, Jamila Bayramova, Khanlar Bashirov, Emin Aliyev, Sevinj Huseynli, Zahir Gasimov, Tarana Muradova, Rufat Khalilzadeh, Elchin Gadimov, Eteri Jafarova and others were awarded honorary titles and today they are successfully working in this ensemble. The ensemble consisted of professionals participated in many International festivals, Azerbaijan Cultural Days organized in Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Turkey, Austria, cultural programs, State events. The ensemble was awarded golden medal of the International Karfagen folk festival in 1979. Taking into account the contribution made in development of national culture the State Dance Ensemble was awarded “Honored Ensemble” in 1991.
Azerbaijan State String Quartet was created in 1998.. The main purpose of the quartet is to popularize Azerbaijani and west-European music. Quartet musicians: Jeila Seidova (1st violin). Soltan Mammadova (2nd violin) - SONOR ensemble concertmaster. Vahtang Imanov (viola). Alexey Miltih (cello). The quartet frequently performs at Azerbaijan State Philarmony, German Church, Baybutov Song Theater, Uzeir Gadjibecov and Niazi museums, etc. The quartet took part in G. Garayev , H Mirza-zade, O. Zulfugarov, A. Rzaev, S. Gadjibekov concerts. Many outstanding musicians and singers such as F. Badalbeyli, Huraman Kasimova, Fidan Kasimova, R. Abdulaev, S. Ashumova, M. Agamalizade and many others performed with the quartet. In 1998 the quartet performed in Paris at a concert dedicated to G. Garayev organized by UNESCO. The quartet took active part in Presidential concerts in Azerbaijan and abroad in Istanbul, Paris, Warsaw, Krakow, Moscow, Vienna. The quartet performed in many towns around Azerbaijan.
